Why Parkview for Cosmetic Bonding?

Closing tooth gaps with dental bonding example

Cosmetic bonding is the fastest, most conservative way to fix a chipped tooth, close a small gap, or reshape a tooth that has always bothered you. In most cases it takes one visit, needs no shots, and removes little or no natural tooth.

So why do so many people get talked into veneers instead? Below we explain exactly what bonding can and can't do, how long it really lasts, what it costs, and how to tell whether it's the right choice for your smile.

The Short Answer

Cosmetic bonding is the best choice for small, targeted fixes: a chip, a gap, a short or uneven tooth, or a stain that whitening can't remove. It is affordable, reversible, and done in a single visit. Porcelain veneers last longer and resist stains better, so they are the better investment when you want to change the color and shape of many teeth at once.

A good cosmetic dentist should tell you which one you actually need, not which one costs more. That's the approach Dr. Perkins takes with every patient.

What is Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding (also called dental bonding or composite bonding) uses a tooth-colored composite resin that is sculpted directly onto your tooth, hardened with a curing light, and polished to match the surrounding enamel.

Unlike veneers or crowns, nothing is made in a lab. The artistry happens chairside, which means the result depends almost entirely on the skill and eye of the dentist doing the work. Dr. Linda Perkins completed the UCLA Aesthetic Continuum and is a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry, an honor held by about 2% of general dentists.

Simply put: bonding adds material to your tooth instead of removing it.

What Cosmetic Bonding Can Fix

  • Chipped or cracked front teeth — the most common reason Scottsdale patients come in for bonding
  • Small gaps between teeth — including the gap between the two front teeth
  • Short, uneven, or worn edges — from grinding or years of normal wear
  • Stains that won't whiten — such as white spots or deep discoloration
  • Minor shape and size differences — like a narrow "peg" lateral tooth
  • Exposed roots — from gum recession, which can also reduce sensitivity
  • Small cavities on front teeth — as a natural-looking alternative to silver fillings

What Bonding Can't Do (Honestly)

Bonding is not the right answer for everyone. We'll tell you if:

  • You want to change the color of your whole smile. Composite does not respond to whitening. If you want whiter teeth, whiten first, then we match your bonding to the new shade.
  • You're treating many teeth for a full makeover. Porcelain veneers hold their color and polish far better over time.
  • The tooth is badly broken or heavily filled. A crown may be needed to protect what's left.
  • Your teeth are crooked. Invisalign may give a better, longer-lasting result, sometimes with a small amount of bonding afterward.
  • You grind or clench heavily. Bonding can chip under heavy force. We may recommend a night guard to protect your investment.

Lifespan figures come from the Cleveland Clinic, which reports bonding typically lasts three to 10 years and is reversible, unlike veneers. National cost ranges vary: Humana cites $100–$500 per tooth out of pocket, Aflac cites $288–$915, and one comparison guide puts bonding at $300–$600 and porcelain veneers at $900–$2,500 per tooth.

How Much Does Cosmetic Bonding Cost in Scottsdale?

Price depends on how many teeth are treated, how much of each tooth is rebuilt, and whether the work is cosmetic or repairs damage.

At time of writing, Parkview Dentistry of Scottsdale charges $256 for one surface for cosmetic bonding.

Does insurance cover bonding? When bonding repairs a chip, crack, cavity, or exposed root, it is often partly covered. Purely cosmetic bonding usually isn't. We accept most insurance plans and will check your benefits before treatment. See our financing and insurance options.

What to Expect During Your Bonding Visit

  1. Consultation and shade matching. Perkins examines the tooth, talks through your goals, and matches the composite shade to your natural enamel. If you're planning to whiten, we do that first.
  2. Gentle preparation. The tooth surface is lightly roughened and conditioned so the resin bonds securely. Most patients need no numbing at all.
  3. Precise application. Composite is applied in thin layers and shaped by hand to rebuild the edge, close the gap, or refine the contour.
  4. Polish and bite check. The tooth is polished to a natural luster and your bite is checked so everything feels right.

Most single-tooth cases take 30–60 minutes. You can eat, drink, and go back to work right away.

Cosmetic Bonding FAQs

Does cosmetic bonding hurt?

Usually not. Because little or no enamel is removed, most patients don't need anesthetic. If bonding covers a cavity or a sensitive root, we'll numb the area first.

How long does dental bonding last?

Typically three to 10 years, depending on where the tooth is, how much was bonded, and your habits. Bonding on the biting edges of front teeth sees more wear than bonding that closes a gap.

Can bonded teeth be whitened?

No. Composite resin doesn't respond to whitening gel. If you want a brighter smile, whiten first and we'll match your bonding to your new shade. If you whiten later, the bonding can be replaced to match.

Is bonding better than veneers?

Neither is "better." Bonding is ideal for small fixes on a few teeth and costs less upfront. Veneers are the better long-term choice for a full smile change. Many patients benefit from a mix of both, which we'll map out at your consultation.

Will bonding stain?

Composite can pick up stains from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco over time, more than porcelain. Regular polishing at your cleanings keeps it looking fresh.

Can bonding close the gap between my front teeth?

Yes, small to moderate gaps are one of the best uses for bonding. Larger gaps may be better treated with Invisalign first.

How much does bonding cost in Scottsdale?

At Parkview Dentistry of Scottsdale, cosmetic bonding is $[XXX] per tooth at time of writing. National ranges run roughly $100 to $900 per tooth depending on complexity.
