Types of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are custom-designed thin shells of tooth-like ceramic or zirconia material similar to a dental crown that fit over your existing teeth. Your existing tooth is not removed but reduced to accommodate the thin veneer. Veneers completely cover and fix teeth that are worn, uneven, misaligned, have spacing, or have chips or cracks. Dental veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create a bright, white smile with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth. Even better, the translucent quality of modern veneer materials provide a natural look than what’s been available in the past. This enhanced aesthetic has made veneers a very popular and effective option for individuals seeking to boost their appearance with a seamless and lifelike appearance..

Composite Veneers

Also known as immediate veneers, composite veneers are veneers hand crafted by the Dentist out of composite resin material while the patient is in the chair.

Pros

  • Can be crafted in the Dentist's chair same day.
  • Less expensive.
  • Can require less enamel removal
  • Easily repaired or touched up if chipped as the dentist can simply add resin and cure.

Cons

  • Prone to discoloration and staining over time
  • Less durable — typically lasts 4–8 years before needing replacement and will more easily break.

Porcelain or Emax Veneers

Fabricated in a dental lab from ceramic or porcelain material, custom-fit to the tooth, then bonded on. Requires two visits.

Pros:

  • Highly stain- and discoloration-resistant (coffee, wine, tobacco have minimal effect)
  • Mimics natural tooth translucency and light reflection very closely
  • Durable — typically lasts 10–15+ years with good care
  • Smooth surface resists plaque buildup
  • Strong, thin shells (as little as 0.3–0.5mm) so less tooth reduction needed with some techniques

Cons:

  • More expensive (often significantly pricier than composite)
  • Requires more enamel removal in traditional prep (though minimal-prep options exist)
  • Multiple appointments usually needed (impression, lab fabrication, bonding)
  • If damaged/cracked, generally must be replaced entirely rather than repaired
  • Requires a skilled ceramist/lab for best aesthetic results

Zirconia Veneers (less common)

Made from zirconium dioxide, a very strong ceramic — more often used for crowns but sometimes for veneers needing extra strength.

Pros:

  • Extremely strong and fracture-resistant
  • Good biocompatibility, low risk of allergic reaction
  • Can be a good option when the underlying tooth is compromised

Cons:

  • Less translucent than porcelain, so can look more opaque/less natural
  • More expensive
  • Harder to adjust or fine-tune shade/shape once fabricated
  • Overkill for veneers in many cases since crowns typically use zirconia's strength benefits better
